Hamilton Masakadza picks youngsters who can step in for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Following their triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 victory, Team India now faces the humongous task finding the successors for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have retired from T20 international cricket.
The BCCI has selected a young squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with Shubman Gill set to lead the team. This presents a prime opportunity for emerging talents to showcase their skills and stake a claim for future selection.
The Indian team suffered a humiliating loss in the first T20I as they failed to chase a moderate target of 116 runs. However, they bounced back strongly in the second T20I, riding on a brilliant century by Abhishek Sharma. This performance saw the Men in Blue inflict a comprehensive 100-run victory over Zimbabwe.
In the final, Virat delivered a brilliant 76-run knock off just 59 balls, once again showcasing his class in a crucial match. Meanwhile, Rohit’s fearless and aggressive batting set the tone for strong starts in nearly every game. The Indian captain finished the ICC event as the second-highest run scorer and then announced his retirement, joining Virat Kohli in stepping away from international cricket.
According to former Zimbabwe cricketer Hamilton Masakadza, India should consider Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as replacement options.
“Losing such talented players leaves a significant void that will be challenging to fill. However, India has a deep talent pool with abundant potential, so finding replacements should not be overly difficult. The real challenge will be identifying players capable of matching the exceptional levels of performance achieved by the departing stars,” noted Masakadza to TOI.
“I’m especially eager to see Shubman Gill’s continued growth and development. After watching him across all three formats, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by his performances. He possesses the talent to step up and fill the void left by departing world-class players. Likewise, Yashasvi has made a promising start to his international career. These two young prospects are certainly ones to keep an eye on as they work to establish themselves at the highest level,” he added.
