UK’s most beautiful seaside town is also a ‘unsung’ beach spot with hardly any visitors | Travel News | Travel

As summer approaches many people are looking forward to having a relaxing time at the beach, but you do not need to travel far in the UK to find somewhere amazing for a holiday.

Weymouth in Dorset, England has recently been named by the Guardian as an “unsung beach town” as it is an incredible place to visit but is not a popular tourist destination due to being near some more popular holiday towns. 

They wrote: “While its wide, sheltered beach is consistently voted among the nation’s favourites, the town itself is often overlooked in favour of its trendier seaside neighbours” 

Despite not being trendy, Weymouth is a fantastic place for beach lovers as it is beautiful, with clear blue water and golden sands while also being near the picturesque white cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site. 

There is also a wide range of activities to do at Weymouth beach from the British classic Punch and Judy shows and donkey rides to water sports such as jet skiing, and paddleboarding. 

The beach also has a historic promenade where you can enjoy the stunning coastal views but also has shops, cafes and restaurants, so you can easily find somewhere to get some fish and chips after a long day at the beach. 

A funfair will also be making an appearance at Weymouth Beach throughout August which will have amusement rides, sideshows and even an incredible firework display. 

Nearby the promenade there is also a beautiful Greenhill Gardens which offers great views of the coast as well as floral displays and a cosy cafe for anyone wanting a more peaceful area to enjoy the sun. 

There is something for everyone at the beach but Weymouth is also known for its historic harbour which is been there since the 13th century and has become famous for being where the Black Drath was originally brought to Britain.

It is a great place to visit for not just history lovers but is known to be beautiful as the harbour is surrounded by many colourful Victorian buildings and boats, making it a great place to take a photograph or have lunch nearby to take in the views. 

Anyone who enjoys history and breathtaking views should also consider visiting Nothe Fort in Weymouth, a well-preserved 18th-century fort which contains a museum, a nuclear shelter, an underground and a network of tunnels. 

It offers incredible views of Weymouth Bay while also holding guided tours and special events throughout the year such as ghost hunts which makes it a great place to visit. 

Anyone who loves nature will also enjoy Weymouth as there is the Radipole Lake Nature Reserve, a wildlife sanctuary at the heart of the town which has nature trails where you can see many species of birds, otters and more. 

There is also the tranquil Bennetts Water Gardens which is a Japanese-style garden which holds an incredible collection of water lilies on many pounds, lakes and steams around the facilities. 

You can take a guided boat tour in the gardens, visit the museum and even get to have some afternoon tea at a cafe which looks out onto the gardens to have a very scenic lunch. 

However, no matter what you enjoy doing on holiday there will be something to enjoy in Weymouth, as despite not being as popular as other nearby towns it has an incredibly beautiful beach making it a great place to visit this summer.
