“In 150 years of cricket, you will never see an umpire giving that out”: Ex-player says that Bangladesh was denied victory against South Africa by umpire
admin June 11, 2024 ArticleWasim Jaffer and Ambati Rayudu slammed umpire Sam Nogajski for his wrong decision in the 17th over of the Bangladesh chase against South Africa in Group D of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Nogajski gave Mahmudullah out after South Africa pacer Ottneil Baartman’s delivery wrapped on the pads. The ball went to the fine leg boundary for a four, but because the batter was given out, the ball was dead, and runs didn’t count.
Mahmudullah took a DRS, and the replays showed that the ball would have missed the stumps. The decision was overturned, but Bangladesh was not given four extra runs.
According to the laws, the ball becomes dead as soon as the umpire raises his finger, and it stays dead even if the third official overturns the decision. Bangladesh lost the match by four runs as South Africa defended 113 runs.
Wasim Jaffer said that the batter was wronged.
“Mahmudullah was wrongly given out LBW; the ball went for four leg byes. The decision was reversed on DRS. Bangladesh didn’t get the 4 runs as the ball is dead once the batter is given out, even if wrongly. And SA ended up winning the game by 4 runs. Feel for Bangladesh fans,” Jaffer wrote on X.

Ambati Rayudu hit out at the umpire.
“In 150 years of cricket, you won’t see an umpire giving that out. That was a terrible call. Just because a part of the leg stump is visible doesn’t mean the batter is out. You also need to look at the angle of the ball from where it was delivered,” Rayudu said on Stat Sports.
Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy said that those four runs could have made the difference in the match.
South Africa posted 113-6 in their 20 overs, with Heinrich Klaasen amassing 46. Tanzim Hasan Sakib took three wickets.
However, Bangladesh managed 109/7 as South Africa won their third consecutive game in Group D.
