Veteran West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell starred against Papua New Guinea at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. In the opening Group C match of the T20 World Cup 2024, the 36-year-old Russell delivered with both bat and ball, picking up 2 wickets for 19 runs in his 3 overs and then contributing an unbeaten 15 runs from just 9 balls. His crucial 40-run partnership for the 6th wicket with Roston Chase helped the West Indies recover from a mid-innings stutter and clinch a 5-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea.
In the T20 World Cup 2024 opener for the West Indies, Russell’s two wickets placed him alongside legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo on an elite list. Russell became only the second West Indies cricketer, after Bravo, to reach the milestone of 500 runs and 50 wickets in the shortest format of the game. Bravo had concluded his T20I career for the West Indies in 2021 with impressive figures of 1255 runs and 78 wickets from 91 matches, while Russell has so far scored 970 runs and taken 51 wickets in 76 matches.
Joining an elite group of West Indies cricketers, he became the sixth player to dismiss at least 50 batters in the international T20 format, following Bravo (78 dismissals), Jason Holder (66), Samuel Badree (54), Sunil Narine (52), and Sheldon Cottrell (52).
There are sixteen players worldwide who have recorded 500 runs and 50 wickets in T20Is; however, only one Indian player makes the list, Hardik Pandya.
India vice-captain Pandya has amassed 1,348 runs and claimed 73 wickets in 92 T20I appearances. He will be a crucial player for India in the ongoing T20 World Cup. After a disappointing IPL 2024 campaign, the 30-year old will look to bounce back and help India end their 11-year drought of an ICC trophy.
