2025 VW Golf R Is Packing 329 HP And More Aggressive Looks

VW is inching closer to the launch of the revised Mk8.5 Golf R and has just dropped some new details about the model after inviting a bunch of journalists to drive the new model in prototype guise in Germany. The key selling point is that this is the most powerful Golf R ever.

Like the original Mk8 Golf R, the mid-life update will be powered by the company’s familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. However, VW’s engineers have increased its output to 329 hp (up from 316 hp), while torque remains the same at 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). Even though drivers will probably be hard-pressed to notice the relatively small horsepower gain, it’s nice to have. These figures reflect the European model as details about the U.S.-spec model have yet to be announced.

VW will only sell the new Golf R with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch sending power through all four wheels. The updated hot hatch will sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, while the wagon version (which won’t make it to the U.S. market) will need 4.8 seconds. A Performance Package will be available in Europe which lifts the car’s top speed up to 168 mph (270 km/h).

It’s not just the car’s engine that has been upgraded. A revised suspension setup means the Mk8.5 sits an inch lower than the car it replaces and will come standard with Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension. The drift mode of the current car has been retained and can send up to 100% of power to the rear wheels. Torque vectoring also comes standard.

All recent prototypes of the new Golf R that we’ve seen are adorned in bright blue camouflage to hide the updated design. The visual changes won’t be hugely significant but they will be noticeable. Updates have been made to the front and rear bumpers and the new car also benefits from revised LED headlights and taillights. Found in the cabin will be a 12.9-inch infotainment display and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, while a head-up display will be an option.
