County Championship: Indian batters Shaw and Sudharsan struggle in England
admin July 2, 2024 ArticleYoung Indian batters Sai Sudharsan and Prithvi Shaw have struggled to impress so far in the County Championship in England. Sudharsan, representing Surrey, and Shaw, playing for Northamptonshire, have failed to make a significant impact in the domestic league.
During Surrey’s home game against Essex at the Oval ground, Sudharsan came in at number six and managed only 14 runs from 47 deliveries, as Surrey posted 262 in the first innings.
Left-arm medium pacer Paul Walter dismissed the 22-year-old batter, and former South African player Simon Harmer completed the catch. In the second innings, Surrey were in all sorts of trouble and found themselves at 44/3. Surrey held a 126-run lead after bowling Essex out for 180 and an 82-run advantage. Sudharsan would be eager to make a more substantial impact for Surrey in their remaining matches.
In his first innings for Northamptonshire, the dynamic right-handed batter Shaw scored 31 runs off just 22 balls, including seven boundaries. This was the team’s second-highest individual score as they could only manage 97 runs in the first innings. However, Northamptonshire were then bowled out for a mere 143 runs within 20 overs in response to Sussex’s first innings total.
In the second innings, Shaw scored a brisk 37 runs off just 41 deliveries, smashing six boundaries before being bowled by left-arm pacer Sean Hunt. Despite Shaw’s efforts, Northamptonshire were struggling at 137/4 in their pursuit of 284 runs. Overall, Shaw struck 13 boundaries across his two innings.
Sudharsan and Shaw are playing their second season for their respective teams. Sudharsan has also voiced his enthusiasm about returning to Surrey for another term.
“I’m thrilled to represent Surrey once more. Last year’s experience with the group was immensely enjoyable, and I’m eager to help the club build on that success,” said Sudharsan.
