A California trip cannot be simply plotted on a map; it unfolds in moments and feelings
In California, one minute, you are adjusting your watch at LAX; the next, you are standing barefoot on sun-warmed sand, cocktail in hand, trying to process how the air can smell like salt and possibility all at once.
There are destinations, and then there are vibes dressed as places. In California, one minute, you are adjusting your watch at LAX; the next, you are standing barefoot on sun-warmed sand, cocktail in hand, trying to process how the air can smell like salt and possibility all at once.
The Golden State is built for exploration. Here, the senses lead, adrenaline follows, and imagination runs wild. From sampling locally foraged produce in a women-run kitchen classroom to picture-perfect artist communities and flying over coastal dunes to slicing through aquamarine bays on a board that floats like a dream. The energy? Welcoming, relaxed, playful, and endlessly photogenic.
Reset in Santa Monica
Minutes from LAX, Santa Monica welcomes visitors with the kind of casual cool only California can truly own. Mornings begin with Beach Flow yoga; a class held right on the sand near the famous Original Muscle Beach facing the Pacific Ocean. Every breath syncs with the waves, gently easing the last of your jet lag.
The Santa Monica Farmers Market sprawls over four city blocks, a center of produce and artisanal delights grown in California. Pick your selection from the freshest ingredients available and head to the Gourmandise School where this local produce takes on a whole new flavor with guidance from a reputed chef. Known for its women-led team and focus on sustainable sourcing, the school offers a delicious way to connect with California’s farm-to-table ethos.
Content Creator Aakash Malhotra recommends a coastal bike ride from Santa Monica Pier to the path. “If you do one thing in California, rent a bike in Santa Monica and just ride. No GPS. No rush. Just let the ocean guide you. One moment you’re gliding past street performers on the pier, and the next you’re watching the sunset melt into the Pacific like it’s custom-made for you. Trust me, the breeze will fix things therapy can’t.”
End the day with a beautiful beach picnic, low tables, textured throws, and chef-curated charcuterie, set against a sunset worthy of its own movie score.
Surprises and Adrenaline on the Central Coast
Driving north from Santa Monica brings a change in pace and palette. The Danish village of Solvang looks plucked from a storybook, complete with windmills and cobblestones. Zip through its quaint streets in an electric Moke, stopping for local pastries and sustainable wine tastings.
As travel influencer Sharanya Iyer puts it, “Solvang was the most pleasant surprise on our road trip in California! I hadn’t realized a place like this existed before we went there. A beautiful little Dutch town, it almost felt like we were in a live movie set! Windmills, beautifully unique homes, Viking museums and shops, troll art, e-mokes…I really had to be convinced this was real!”
Further up the Central Coast, Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo offers a high-octane history lesson. Banner Airways flies restored WWII biplanes over the Oceano Dunes SVRA, one of the last California beaches where you can drive directly on the sand. The aerial view spans 80 miles of coastline, pure exhilaration and vintage charm rolled into one. Sharanya couldn’t get enough, “I also loved flying in an open cockpit WWII plane at SLO CAL. A unique experience I doubt I’d have been able to do anywhere else!”
Morro Bay slows everything down. Its centerpiece, Morro Rock, is a 23-million-year-old volcanic plug sacred to the Chumash people. The bay itself is ideal for e-foiling, an adventurous blend of surfing and flying that’s surprisingly beginner-friendly.
Further inland, Santa Margarita Ranch invites riders to explore on horseback through vineyards and oak-lined trails. Operated by multi-generational winegrowing families, it’s a living nod to California’s rancho roots. For lunch, Ancient Peaks Winery pairs estate-grown varietals with a farm-to-table menu. Nearby, the Camp CASS Experience & Tasting in Paso Robles just 30 minutes away, brings together outdoor adventure and luxury tasting along with wine classes, sidecar tours and more.
End your day at Sensorio and its immersive art installations featuring over 100,000 solar-powered fiber-optic lights that you can walk through, creating one of the most surreal visual experiences.
Awe and Delight in the High Sierra
In the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, everything grows quiet and purposeful. One of the state’s 9 National parks, the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is famous for Mount Whitney, the largest mountain in the contiguous USA, giant sequoias, deep canyons, and rivers offering a bounty of adventure such as hiking, bouldering, rafting, and mountain biking. Trails lead to General Sherman, the world’s largest living tree, and through the Giant Forest’s House and Senate groves. Winter reveals a softer side: snow-draped trunks, ranger-led snowshoe tours, and Tharp’s Log, a 19th-century cabin carved into a fallen sequoia. Tunnel Log offers a drive-through moment of wonder, a literal passage through California’s natural grandeur.
The State of Being
A California trip cannot be simply plotted on a map; it unfolds in moments and feelings. A sunset. A taste of something grown locally. A view from above the clouds. Each stop rewires the senses. California, in all its contrast and scale, isn’t just a place to visit, it’s somewhere to play, fully, wildly, and without rush.
What to pack: Aakash says, “California’s mood swings are real, mornings were hoodie weather and afternoons felt like sunscreen commercials. So, pack layers, sneakers, your best playlist, and a curious heart.”
Where to stay: In Santa Monica, stay at The Pierside Hotel where you can travel from bed to beach in a heartbeat. Vespera Resort in Pismo Beach makes you feel like you are in your own private beach house. At the Sequoia National Park, the Wuksachi Lodge is nestled amid a majestic sequoia forest and soaring Sierra peaks.
