AIIMS Doctors Transform 254kg ‘Super-Super Obese’ Man In High-Risk Weight Loss Surgery

In a significant feat in bariatric care, doctors at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) successfully performed a high-risk weight loss surgery on a 31-year-old government employee from Uttar Pradesh, whose weight had reached a staggering 254 kg.
The patient, categorised as ‘super-super obese’ with a body mass index (BMI) of 75.5, had been battling obesity since childhood.
Failed Diet And Exercise Led To Bariatric Surgery
Despite following a strict diet and exercise regimen over the past three years, the patient was unable to reduce his weight. He had once lost 90 kg about a decade ago but had since regained it, significantly impacting his personal and professional life. With conventional weight loss methods proving ineffective, AIIMS doctors opted for surgical intervention.
Led by Dr Manjunath Maruti Pol, the medical team carried out a ‘one-anastomosis gastric bypass’, a bariatric procedure that reduces the stomach’s size to 60–80 ml and reroutes the digestive tract to the small intestine. This surgery promotes hormonal changes that help control blood sugar levels and improve conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol.
Surgery Backed By Intensive Pre And Post-Care
Given the patient’s extreme obesity, the operation carried a significant risk. Prior to surgery, he was placed on a C-PAP machine to manage obstructive sleep apnoea, and his blood pressure and diabetes were stabilised. He also underwent physiotherapy and a supervised weight loss programme to build physical resilience.
Following the successful operation, he was closely monitored in the ICU, where he received intensive care to prevent complications such as blood clots. Doctors noted that such surgeries come with the risk of respiratory issues, intestinal leakage, and nutritional deficiencies, necessitating continuous monitoring by a multidisciplinary bariatric team.
He was discharged from the hospital on May 30, with doctors highlighting the importance of expert-led interventions for cases of super-super obesity, where standard weight loss efforts fail to yield results.
