Toyota’s 80s-Inspired Corolla FX Edition Is A Retro Dream That Falls Short

The special edition rocks white alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and a retro-flavored Corolla emblem on the tailgate

Toyota has rolled out a new special edition of the Corolla Hatchback for the US market, called the FX Edition. A nod to the 1987 Corolla FX16, it gets a few subtle updates to the exterior and interior but sticks with the same chassis and engine as the standard model. So, while it may look the part, don’t expect any performance magic under the hood, as it’s all show, no go, at least compared to the regular version.

The FX Edition follows up on last year’s FX sedan, with a few distinct differences in style. The real standout is the new 18-inch alloy wheels, which resemble those from the Nightshade trim but come with a Gloss White finish for a rally-inspired look. A black rear wing and a retro-style Corolla emblem on the tailgate finish off the package, giving the car a bit more personality.

While it’s not packing the aggressive body kit of the GR Corolla, the FX edition does sport a more refined aesthetic. The color options are limited to three choices: Ice Cap (white), Inferno (orange), and Blue Crush Metallic (blue).

Inside, the car continues with a sporty, yet subtle vibe. The black upholstery is accented with orange stitching on the dashboard, door cards, gear knob, and seats. The seats themselves are the Sport Touring variety, offering more bolstering, integrated headrests, and suede inserts for a little extra grip when cornering (though don’t get too excited about the corners – it’s still a standard Corolla)

The Corolla Hatchback FX is based on the entry-level SE trim, so while you do get some modern tech, it’s not exactly loaded with bells and whistles. You’ll find a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment display, which feels small compared to the 10.5-inch screen available on the FX sedan. Still, you do get wireless charging and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, so at least it’s got the basics covered.

Carry-Over Chassis And Powertrain

Unlike the FX sedan, which got a lowered suspension and sportier steering setup, the hatchback sticks with the same chassis as the regular model. It’s a bit of a missed opportunity, as if you’re going to give the car a sportier look, why not give it a more dynamic drive to match? It’s not as if the hatch needs a full performance overhaul, but some tweaks like the European Corolla GR Sport or Japanese-spec Corolla Active Sports might have made it feel a little more engaging.

Under the hood, things stay predictable. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT gearbox sending power to the front wheels. If you’re looking for a rush of excitement, this isn’t the car for you. It’s a solid engine, but it won’t set any hearts racing.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX is set to hit US dealerships this fall, with a limited run of just 1,600 units. Pricing details will be revealed closer to launch, but for reference, the base 2025 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE currently starts at $23,780.
