Frostpunk is getting an Unreal Engine remake with mod support, as 11 Bit Studios puts its own proprietary game engine on ice

Frostpunk 1886, an Unreal Engine remake of the beloved dystopian management game, has just been announced. Set for a 2027 release, this announcement comes as developers 11 Bit Studios puts its own proprietary game engine – the Liquid Engine – on ice.

According to the official press release sent out alongside a new teaser trailer, this won’t just be a visual overhaul. The game will be recieving official mod support, new mechanics, laws, content to play through, as well as an entirely new Purpose path that experienced players will be able to tackle.

11 Bit Studios has also stated that using Unreal Engine allows Frostpunk 1886 to be a “living, expandable platform” with the possibility of new DLC content in the future. The studio has previously stuck to more traditional video game support, putting out games as singular products such as This War of Mine and the original Frostpunk, then supporting them later down the line with DLC releases.

This announcement comes as 11 Bit Studios continues support for Frostpunk 2, which continues to get DLC updates and free content updates. 11 Bit Studios has also stated that with Frostpunk 2, the company is in a “new era”, aiming to release more in-house projects in the future. So, good news for Frostpunk fans, as well as suffering simulators in general. If 11 Bit Studios is good at anything, it’s making games that force you into morally dubious decisions.
