BMW M4 Nurburgring Edition Is Too Exclusive For The West
- BMW has introduced the M4 Nurburgring Edition, which pays tribute to the iconic track.
- It’s based on the M4 Competition and features 523 hp as well as a ‘Green Hell’ paint job.

BMW has used the Shanghai Auto Show to introduce the M4 Nurburgring Edition. It celebrates the iconic track as well as the circuit’s relationship with BMW M. Since the track is also known as the “Green Hell,” the special edition has been painted BMW Individual Frozen Deep Green. The eye-catching paint job is joined by a red accented grille as well as bronze wheels that are backed up by red brake calipers.

The interior largely carries over, but is notable for featuring special door sill plates and two-tone sport seats with an embroidered outline of the Nurburgring on the headrests. Elsewhere, there’s carbon fiber trim and an Alcantara-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel.
The special edition is based on the all-wheel drive M4 Competition and this means it features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six developing 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS). This enables the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in as little as 3.2 seconds.
Production is limited to 53 units in a nod to BMW M’s 53rd anniversary. Unfortunately, the special edition is limited to China.
BMW didn’t have much else of note in Shanghai, but the company showcased the Vision Driving Experience concept in a fluorescent paint finish. It features special light-sensitive pigments that recharge during the day and appear at night as “whitish yellow to an expressive neon yellow, depending on the state of charge.”
The concept also wears a “magic film.” When stimulated by UV light, it creates an “expressive gradient from yellow to orange to pink.”
BMW confirmed the iX3 Neue Klasse will go into production later this year, but it won’t be headed to China. Instead, they’ll get a “separate version” in 2026 that is unique to the country.
Speaking of China-specific changes, the country is getting a tweaked version of Panoramic iDrive and BMW Operating System X. The company didn’t go into many specifics, but said “around 70% of the software in the Chinese version consists of locally developed and adapted source code.”

In particular, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant relies on Alibaba. Following the initial rollout, the technology will be gradually enhanced with artificial intelligence technology from Deepseek.
Last but not least, BMW staged the Chinese debut of the 3-Series 50 Years Edition. It’s limited to 2,500 units that appear to have a special paint job as well as unique 19-inch wheels. They’re joined by carbon fiber trim and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with a red 12 o’clock marker.
