After much anticipation, the New Pamban Bridge – which will connect Rameswaram Island with the Tamil Nadu mainland – is all set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6. The 2.2 km long vertical lift sea bridge is the first of its kind in India. This bridge is all set to give travel opportunities to tourists and locals, thereby opening new avenues for economic growth in the region.
As the New Pamban Bridge gears up for its inauguration, here are five things that you can do in Rameswaram.
Visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is also a part of the Char Dham yatra. The temple is famous for its grand architecture, intricately carved corridors (the longest temple corridor in India), and 22 holy wells inside the complex, each believed to have unique healing properties.
Explore the New Pamban Bridge
The bridge offers spectacular views of the Bay of Bengal. Watching a train pass over the bridge with the sea underneath is a sight to behold.
Relax at Dhanushkodi Beach
Located at the southeastern tip of Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi is a ghost town destroyed in the 1964 cyclone. It has an eerie, serene charm with the remains of old churches, railway stations, and houses. Legend has it that this was the starting point of Lord Rama’s bridge to Lanka.
Visit Abdul Kalam Memorial
Rameswaram is the hometown of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, India’s beloved former President and Missile Man. The Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial in Pei Karumbu honours his life and achievements. The memorial houses his personal belongings, photographs, and models of missiles and rockets he worked on.
Take a Spiritual Walk on Agni Theertham
Just outside the Ramanathaswamy Temple lies Agni Theertham, a sacred beach where pilgrims take a holy dip before entering the temple. It is believed that taking a dip here washes away sins and purifies the soul.
