Every month, there are several Masik Shivratris, but Maha Shivratri is the most significant. In the lunar month of Phalguna or Magha, the celebration takes place on the fourteenth day of the dark (waning) half, one day before the new moon. This year, Maha Shivratri will be observed on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

As per Drik Panchang, the Nishita Kaal Puja timing is from 12:09 AM to 12:59 AM on February 27. The Shivaratri Parana Time is scheduled from 06:48 AM to 08:54 AM on February 27 this year.

Ratri First Prahar Puja Time: 06:19 PM to 09:26 PM on February 26, 2025.

Ratri Second Prahar Puja Time: 09:26 PM to 12:34 AM on February 27, 2025.

Ratri Third Prahar Puja Time: 12:34 AM to 03:41 AM on February 27, 2025.

Ratri Fourth Prahar Puja Time: 03:41 AM to 06:48 AM on February 27, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Chaturdashi Tithi will begin at 11:08 AM on February 26, 2025 and end at 08:54 AM on February 27 this year.

Maha Shivratri 2025: History

The rich cultural and mythical roots of Maha Shivratri’s mythological past indicate that it represents several significant facets of Lord Shiva. Here are a few of the most well-known stories connected to Maha Shivratri:

Marriage of Shiva and Parvati:

One of the most widely held beliefs is that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on the day of Maha Shivratri. This marriage is grandly celebrated because it represents the union of masculine and feminine forces in the cosmos and the harmony of the mind and soul.

Shiva Lingam:

Another important part of Maha Shivratri is the worship of the Shiva Lingam, which symbolises the formlessness of Shiva. According to legend, Shiva made his initial appearance as a lingam on this day. To obtain blessings for health and moksha (freedom from the cycle of birth and death), devotees donate milk, water, bel leaves and fruits to the Shiva Lingam, keep fasts and carry out rituals.

Shiva’s Cosmic Dance:

It is thought that Lord Shiva does the divine dance of creation, preservation and destruction on the night of Maha Shivratri. The universe’s cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution is thought to have its origins in this dance, known as tandava.

Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Milky Ocean):

According to the tale, a pot of poison appeared from the ocean when the gods and demons were performing Samudra Manthan to gain amrita or the nectar of immortality. The entire cosmos would have been destroyed by this poison since it was so powerful.

Shiva consumed the poison to save the world and when his wife Parvati touched his throat, the poison caused it to turn blue. Shiva is hence sometimes referred to as Neelkanth, or “the one with the blue throat.” This act of preserving the universe is celebrated on Maha Shivratri.

Maha Shivratri 2025: Significance

Many people are unaware of the deeper importance of Maha Shivratri, which is mentioned in ancient texts, including the Padma Purana, Linga Purana and Skanda Purana.

Maha Shivratri is also seen by some as the sacred marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, symbolising the ideal harmony of energy and force. Others bring to mind Lord Shiva’s tale of defending the world from evil by consuming deadly poison that came from the churning cosmic ocean, emphasising how this spiritual path can result in freedom from the never-ending cycle of birth and death.

The cosmic dance of Tandava, which depicts the universe’s natural cycles of creation and dissolution, is thought to be performed by Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri.

Maha Shivratri 2025: Rituals

Devotees perform rigorous rituals on the day of Maha Shivratri to merit and request Lord Shiva’s blessings. Even while the majority of these rites can be carried out at home, some individuals would rather perform them at the well-known temples of Lord Shiva or in the vicinity of their homes.

Before cleaning the house temple, devotees get up early before daybreak, take a bath with gangajal and water and then change into clean clothes. On this day, people dress in white or saffron, particularly for the Puja.

Additionally, a lot of people go to Shiva temples and offer the Shivling with milk, water and bilva leaves. They also participate in the Rudrabhishek ritual as well, in which Panchamrit—a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar—is used to worship Lord Shiva.

Om Namah Shivay can be said in a private setting or a collective setting during group chant sessions.

With intense devotion and love for Lord Shiva, many devotees also practice a full day of fasting, typically known as Nirjala vrat. Devotees only break this fast in the early morning hours following the fourth Prahar.

Before that, they meditate, perform bhajans and recite mantras while staying up all night. On this night, it is believed that remaining awake and engrossed in devotion to Shiva facilitates the reception of his holy energies and benefits.
