2027 BMW 3-Series: Everything We Know About The Neue Klasse

The next BMW 3-Series will look similar to the fully electric i3 sedan, despite riding on different underpinnings

Sedans might not dominate sales charts like their SUV counterparts these days, but the 3-Series isn’t going anywhere. This compact executive sedan remains a cornerstone of BMW’s lineup, carrying a legacy that’s been around for half a century. Now, the 3-Series is gearing up for its next chapter, with a new generation set to launch in 2026, and it’s coming in two distinct flavors: all-electric and internal combustion.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because BMW’s been work-shopping this approach with their bigger sedans, the i5/5-Series and i7/7-Series. The 3-Series (and its electric twin, the i3 sedan) will follow a similar playbook, giving buyers the choice between old-school horsepower and cutting-edge electric performance.

Recent spy shots of prototypes have revealed both gas-powered and fully electric versions of the next-gen 3-Series. While both share the “Neue Klasse” design language, the differences in proportions are telling. The ICE prototypes feature a slightly longer hood, a sharper dash-to-axle ratio, and a more upright windshield. These elements combined make it look less like a complete EV-inspired redesign and more like an extensively reworked version of the current G20-generation BMW 3-Series.

The spy photos have sparked the imagination of digital artists Theottle and Kelsonic, who have created renderings of the upcoming BMW 3-Series, offering an early glimpse of its potential exterior design.

A Shark Nose With Bite

BMW’s signature shark-nose styling makes a return here, sharpening the sedan’s sporty stance. The effect is further bolstered by a deeper, more aggressive front bumper and subtly flared fenders that add muscle without overindulging. Flush door handles bring the styling in line with BMW’s latest clean-surfaced aesthetic, while the greenhouse and Hofmeister kink stay intact—thankfully, some traditions are non-negotiable.

With the rear end of the prototypes using provisional taillights, we have to use our imagination to fill the gaps. Theottle’s rendering is inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept from 2023, featuring a full-width taillight cluster with modern LED graphics. On the other hand, Kelsonik’s take mimics the slimmer LEDs of the 5-Series.

Further down, the rendering artists designed distinct bumpers inspired by styling cues from the BMW M division. This aligns with earlier prototype sightings, which featured sporty alloy wheels, larger brakes, and M-style quad tailpipes.

While we have yet to get a glimpse of the 3-Series prototype’s interior during development testing, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. BMW recently introduced the Panoramic iDrive system at CES, and it’s expected to trickle into the new model.

The centerpiece of the new setup is an expansive pillar-to-pillar display mounted at the base of the windscreen. This customizable screen is divided into three sections and is complemented by a secondary infotainment touchscreen positioned lower on the dashboard.

Two Platforms, Two Paths

Unlike the i5/5-Series and i7/7-Series, where BMW paired EVs and ICE models on the same platform, the i3 and 3-Series are believed to head down different paths. The all-electric i3 sedan will ride on the Neue Klasse architecture, shared with the upcoming iX3 SUV, while the combustion-powered 3-Series will reportedly stick to the CLAR platform, which also underpins the forthcoming G45 X3. This would explain the differences in proportions and styling details we see in the i3 and ICE 3-Series prototypes here.

Based on what we’ve seen with the mechanically related X3, the next-gen 3-Series will likely offer mild-hybrid versions of BMW’s proven engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter inline-six, both upgraded for better horsepower and fuel economy.

A Mild-Hybrid M3 Is In The Cards

Interestingly, even the mighty M3 isn’t immune to electrification. However, as BMW officials told us in a recent trip, the next M3 will forego the heavy plug-in hybrid setup of the M5 and instead adopt a lighter mild-hybrid system. Meanwhile, for those tracking BMW’s EV ambitions, an all-electric quad-motor equivalent of the M3 is already under development, promising tire-melting lunacy for the brave few.

The current G20-generation BMW 3-Series first graced the stage in 2018, with minor facelifts arriving in 2022 and 2024. If BMW sticks to its usual timeline, this heavily updated version—complete with “new generation” branding and styling, will likely hit the streets in 2026, alongside its fully electric Neue Klasse sibling, the i3 sedan.
