On ‘violence and misogyny’ in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan’s speech echoes Kangana Ranaut’s views from years ago

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan bagged the CNN News18 Indian of the Year 2023 award

At a recent event, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan had one of his most heartfelt interactions with the media. From giving insights into the challenging times his family faced to his major comeback to the big screen with three back-to-back blockbusters — Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki, the actor spoke his heart out at the CNN News18 Indian Of The Year Awards.

During the media conversation, the actor also spoke about playing a negative role in films. Amid the criticism that Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal has been receiving, especially for glorifying violence and misogyny, SRK said that he “is a hopeful person and likes to tell happy stories.”

In what seemed to be a veiled jibe at the Sandeep Reddy Vanga film, Shah Rukh said, “If I play a bad guy, I will make sure he suffers a lot and he dies a dog’s death. I believe goodness begets goodness and badness deserves a kick in the backside.”

The actor also added that he believes in playing characters that will give people the courage to dream and thus wants to keep working hard with hope.

While the actor’s recent comments about playing an antagonist have been hitting headlines, it seems like similar words were voiced by actress Kangana Ranaut a few years ago.

As a guest on Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate, which also had Deepika Padukone and Parineeti Chopra on the show, Kangana Ranaut was seen talking about the indecency, violence, and abuse shown against women in movies.

“I don’t say that you shouldn’t show dark films or not show something which is not real. However, when you show such things it becomes a responsibility to show its consequences as well. This is clearly a lack of creativity. You can take the examples of negative characters or tragic stories written by Shakespeare. Their influence is so positive,” the Tejas actress said.

Kangana further went on to claim that Bollywood has been showing women’s characters in such a manner and with the use of such words like they are “tandoori chicken.” The actress further asserted that no matter how Indian movies are defended, these things remain shameful and are being shown in a negative manner which can affect the upcoming generations.

While there is quite an uncanny resemblance between the remarks made by the two actors, there is also a section of other celebrities who have also shown their objection towards certain scenes, dialogues, as well as the portrayal of characters in the Sandeep Reddy Vanga film.
