The world of skincare is constantly changing now, and right now, Korean beauty trends are taking over social media. One trend that has everyone buzzing is the Korean head spa, a treatment that is being hailed as a superior alternative to traditional scalp therapies. So, what’s all the hype about? With promises of silky, healthy hair and a relaxing escape from the everyday grind, the Korean head spa seems like the perfect treat. In a report by The Indian Express, Lalita Arya, vice-president, DermaPuritys Aesthetic Clinic, highlighted the focus of Korean spas on scalp health. She explains that these spas involve a series of steps designed to cleanse and rejuvenate the scalp.

“The desire is to eliminate the buildup of impurities, enhance blood flow, and create a proper scalp habitat,” said Arya as quoted by the outlet.

Dr Jatin Mittal, co-founder, skin expert and cosmetologist at Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi, added that the Korean head spa is a specialised treatment rooted in traditional Korean beauty rituals.

“It’s similar to other spa treatments but specifically targets the scalp,” said Dr Mittal. He further elaborated that these spas frequently incorporate traditional Korean herbal ingredients like ginseng, green tea and mugwort – elements that are typically not found in Western scalp treatments. He explained that these natural components are thought to provide nourishment to both the scalp and hair from within, enhancing overall health.

Korean head spas are unique for featuring an extensive 10 to 12-step process, which incorporates acupressure massage, the popular cascading waterfall, specialised scalp invigorating tools and the application of nourishing tonics.

Ted Kim, founder of Suchehwa by Ted in Singapore, shared his insights with the magazine Her World about the unique features of Korean head spas, particularly the signature cascading waterfall. This element is not merely decorative; it plays a crucial role in the treatment.

“This rhythmic flow not only enhances relaxation but also helps release tension in the head. As the continuous stream of warm, nutrient-infused water flows over the scalp, it also deeply conditions your hair,” Kim said.

He added that the treatment has been especially popular with new mothers who struggle with postpartum hair loss.

While these spas may seem enticing, Arya emphasises that they shouldn’t replace effective home care routines. Regular scalp cleansing, conditioning and even simple finger massages should be part of daily hair care regimen. For individuals experiencing persistent scalp issues, especially after visiting head spas, seeking advice from a skin specialist is highly recommended, according to Arya.
