Maserati Eyeing More Limited-Run Specials Like Track-Only MCXtrema

Maserati is open to the idea of more limited-run, track-only models like the MC20-based MCXtrema, although details about what the firm may have up its sleeve remain thin on the ground.

The Italian automaker unveiled the special MCXtrema at last year’s Monterey Car Week and will build just 62 for its most enthusiastic clients. While based around the road-legal MC20, the MCXtrema has been significantly upgraded to produce more power, generate more downforce, and weigh much less than the road car.

The Drive recently spoke with Maserati Corse head Giovanni Sgro at the Formula E Portland E-Prix about the car. Sgro expressed interest in similar models down the road thanks to the positive reception to the MCXtrema.

“I think it makes a tremendous amount of sense to explore what the future of this ‘few-off’ really means for us,” he said. “It is a halo product that allows us to really represent the brand at its fullest. We were born on-track, so we have to obviously talk about performance. And this car obviously does that, but we didn’t sacrifice design for it.”

“It really gives us great indication that these objects, these performing machines are what our audience wants,” he added. “And I think it’s really important to continue on this path as well.”

Finding a suitable donor car for its next limited-run model could prove a challenge for Maserati. The MC20 is the only true mid-engined supercar in its current range but it’s certainly conceivable the current GranTurismo, which is also offered in an all-electric variant, to get a thorough reskin and a power boost. After all, Ferrari built the 599XX around its flagship GT car, rather than an outright supercar, so there’s no reason why Maserati couldn’t do the same.
