Jeep Wagoneer S Squares Off Against Tesla Model Y Performance In New Video

Jeep has released a new video promoting the Wagoneer S, ahead of its full reveal in New York City on May 30. It’s a long time coming as the company kicked off the teaser campaign way back in January.

In the clip, Jeep says they’re taking on America’s best-selling EV brand and shows the Wagoneer S go head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y Performance. Unfortunately, things are a lot less exciting than they sound as the video is more focused on numbers than fun.

With that in mind, the company says the Wagoneer S has 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) and 617 lb-ft (836 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds – with the rollout subtracted – and this makes it slightly faster than the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

That particular model went out of production a few years ago and was billed as the “most powerful and quickest SUV ever.” It featured a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 developing 707 hp (527 kW / 717 PS) and 645 lb-ft (874 Nm) of torque. This enabled the SUV to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, run the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds, and hit a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).

Getting back to the Model Y Performance comparison, Tesla says it takes 3.5 seconds to hit 60 mph (96 km/h). The vehicle also has an EPA estimated range of 279 miles (449 km), which is significantly less than the 300+ mile (483 km) range being claimed by Jeep. That being said, the Model Y Performance starts at $51,490 and you can’t even get a Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid for that price.

We’ll learn more about the Wagoneer S shortly, but the model features an aerodynamically optimized design and an illuminated seven slot grille. Buyers will also find a digital instrument cluster, a widescreen infotainment system, a front passenger display, and a lower display for climate control and seat settings.

Other highlights include a panoramic sunroof, a color-selectable ambient lighting system, and a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system. The model also sports a rotary shifter and a Selec-Terrain toggle with Sand, Snow, Eco, Auto, and Sport settings.

The Wagoneer S rides on the STLA Large platform and will be Jeep’s first global EV. It will be launched in the United States this fall, before spreading to other markets.
